Violet Tok Soonie Kaiawe, 95, of Hawi died Feb. 20 at Kohala Hospital. Born in Honolulu, she was a homemaker, 4-H club leader, member of university extension/correspondent for the former Hilo Tribune-Herald who wrote a weekly column, “Kaiawe Commentary” and an autobiography, “Violet of Kohala — Growing Up on a Hawaiian Sugar Plantation.” She also worked at Project Learn in Kohala, with numerous charitable organizations and was a member of Ku‘ikahi Baptist Church. Visitation 9-11:30 a.m. Saturday at Landmark Baptist Church, 54-3668 Akoni Pule Hwy. in Honomakau. Funeral service at 11:30 a.m. Burial in Hawi county cemetery. Lunch at Jodo Mission Hall in Hawi.
